Keloids
Keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue on the wound surface of a thermal burn during the reparative stage. It forms an irregularly shaped protrusion that resembles the shell and legs of a crab, thus the term “keloid” (from Greek for crab), in contrast to a simple heaping up of scar tissue (hypertrophic scar). The latter is usually caused by a secondary burn, and a keloid results from a primary thermal burn. Plastic surgery was performed on many to remove keloid scars, though recurrence of these scars was not uncommon.

Station 2 Radiation and DNA
The human cell is very complex. As you have been discussing with Mr. Bartlet every cell in your body contains a nucleus with DNA. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. It is special, because it holds the code for every cell in your body. That's right. Every cell in your body uses DNA as an instruction manual. The person that you are right now is determined by your DNA. DNA is like a recipe book for who you are! Every cell knows what to do and how to act because of your DNA.
However, we all know that if you are trying to cook something, like cookies, and forget to put something into the mixing bowl that is important, like flour or sugar, then your cookies will not come out tasting good. Maybe you accidentally add peanuts into a chicken salad, like my husband did, and the chicken salad turned out tasting like peanut butter. EWWWWW!!!!! if You do not follow a cooking recipe appropriately then the food you make will not taste like it should.
Sometimes our DNA (our recipe book for making cells) messes up. The main cause for these mess ups are caused by radiation. Radiation is the process of sending off energy in the form of light, heat, x-rays or nuclear particles. An example of radiation are the energy waves off of a nuclear bomb. Radiation goes through the nucleus in cells and damages DNA.
These accidental mess ups or damages caused by radiation are called mutations.
List of diseases caused by exposure to radiation.
